CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jamal felt the warmth of the sun tumbling between the open blinds onto his skin. He turned on his side and pulled the covers up to his chin. He was awake but he didn’t feel like getting up. It was almost six in the morning when he finally collapsed onto the queen sized bed in the slightly cleaner motel Smurf had found after Romeo hotwired a new car; one that wouldn’t raise as much suspicion with four young men of color riding in it.

After passing up three motels that Jamal said no to, they found one that took cash and didn’t require ID. Smurf and Romeo went inside to get the room and came back with two keys. They had got two rooms that connected to each other. Any other time Jamal would have been irritated but he was too tired to complain and the idea of finally having some time alone with Diego made the situation easier to swallow. He didn’t even let the idea of Smurf and Romeo being alone bother him that much. I aint got no claim to that nigga, he had thought. Fuck it.

Jamal took in a deep breath and let the air flow gently from his lungs. He laid there and enjoyed the silence. There was little doubt in his mind that the peace and quiet would be gone soon enough. For now, he wanted to just enjoy the calm before the storm. And he knew a storm was coming.

As much as he tried, Jamal couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen. He never trusted Slim or Bricks for that matter. Jamal always had a critical eye on them niggas. He was still plotting on how he was going to eventually take Slim’s ass out and put him six feet under. But something he couldn’t put his finger on nagged at him. It was like a feeling that seemed to taunt him from the back of his mind and he just couldn’t reach it.

So many things had went down that put Jamal on edge. First, Bricks waited until they were close as shit to D.C. to stop and get all the shit they needed. And then they boosted a truck that cost as much as some houses in Atlanta. And to add insult to injury, he brings some chick he says is his ex-wife back to the motel room.

If that nigga was trying to get some pussy he could have went to that bitch, Jamal thought. Something wasn’t right about that hoe. She aint even flinch at the sight of a gun in her face.

Jamal reached up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He looked at the alarm clock on the dresser. It was a little past noon. He looked over at the two duffle bags holding his and Diego’s cut from the stick ups from the night before. The smile that spread on his face from thinking about that cash slowly faded as a series of question exploded in his mind.
