Chapter 24

Mail arrived the next morning, and that always cheered me. I quickly peeled open the first letter. Written on lined notebook paper, Mama’s distinctive cursive read:

Dear Laura,

I have been busy. We are all fine. Your brothers are out of school now. This summer is miserable—hot and muggy. At least you have air-conditioning there, so that is good.

Your daddy and me are coming to see you next Sunday. I hope you are okay.

Love,

Your mama

Only three more days and they would be here to visit. This time, I would be sure not to upset Mama. Just the thought of a good meal in a restaurant and an outing made my day. And just maybe we could talk about Jamie.

Grammy’s card was lovely. Always frugal yet creative, she had drawn pastel flowers on a piece of paper with colored pencils and taped it on the front of a slip of heavy paper. Inside she had written a sweet verse about how she was thinking of me.

To my sweet Lady Bug, the note began. I traced the words with my finger. Her handwriting was rough, with a few misspelled words scattered throughout the letter. She had taught herself to read and write as a young girl on a sharecropper’s farm in Alabama in the early 1900s.

I do miss you so much. I hope your halth is good. Church servus was a nice one Sunday. Miss Elenore fell, hurt her back. Say a prayer. It’s sure hot here but I still work in my garden every day. You will be home soon Honey.

I love you so,

Your Grammy
