Chapter Seven:
Letting Go!
“Tremendous power lies in letting go.”
Carol Talbot
KEY QUESTIONS:
Who are you being?
Does your past create your present and future?
Is it time to let your ‘story’ go?
Just imagine what it would be like if you could see yourself through the eyes of the person you’ve become?
Albert Einstein believed there is no true division between past and future, there is rather a single existence. However, he was unable to change the temporal mentality ingrained in society. British physicist, Julian Barbour states that the illusion of the past arises because each now contains objects that appear as ‘records.’ ‘The only evidence you have of last week is your memory. But memory comes from a stable structure of neurons in your brain now.’
Let’s say you go to an allopathic doctor expecting a prescription of pills or the option of surgery for whatever ails you. He says, ‘you’ve got blank, blank, blank.’ If you have no idea what ‘blank, blank, blank’ is, it holds no meaning for you. He has not said it’s cancer, leukemia, a virus or mental disorder. He has just said you’ve got ‘blank, blank, blank.’ Actually ‘blank, blank, blank’ could even be a good thing because you have no frame of reference for it and it is not linked or associated with any memories. If the doctor says ‘blank, blank, blank’ with an expression and voice tonality of extreme worry and concern you would probably place some meaning in that. If he says ‘blank, blank, blank’ with a smile on his face you would probably take it in a positive direction. You create the interpretation in the now. It is the filter of experience and memory that impacts our expectations in the now and creates meaning for us.
The new model of the world is that everything is created in the ‘now,’ which means you can transcend time. All you need to do is change the way you think, change how you view past events and change your approach to life. That is easier said than done.
People get stuck in their story. Let’s say you meet some new friends and they ask about what you do and how you got to where you are right now. You tell them your story. Or if your life is not working and you go for help to a therapist, coach or counsellor, you are going to be sharing your story. The story you identify yourself with gets told over and over again.
If you go and see a presentation, chances are the speaker will share their ‘story.’ How many times is that presenter sharing the same story, holding them in an endless loop!
When I met Masood, it was over a year since his relationship with his wife had gone into crisis mode due to what he believed to be ‘inappropriate behavior’. Since that time, they had been going through individual and relationship counselling as well as each seeking other healing modalities. Every time they went to a therapist they were asked to share their story again which was actually keeping them stuck.
