CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Ten days later…

“Sasha … hey, Sasha! Come here a minute.”

Sasha was right in the middle of spraying an intergalactic space scene onto a little girl’s birthday cake and couldn’t look up. “Be right there.”

“Remember that woman you were looking for?”

Sasha nearly dropped her airbrush. “Yes!”

“It’s not her, but the gal she comes in with is sitting out front by the window.”

Sasha pulled off her hairnet and untied her apron. She followed Bridget into the customer area and almost froze when she saw who the woman was. She ducked down behind the counter. Bridget looked down at her. “Do you owe her money or something?”

“No, we had a run-in on New Year’s Eve.”

“What kind of run-in?”

“She was harassing the woman I’m trying to find. She’s her thesis adviser.”

Bridget looked back at her and frowned. “Are you going to talk to her?”

It had been nearly two weeks since New Year’s Eve and there had been no sign of Naomi. Sasha knew that talking to Carolynn might be her only hope. “I guess I have to.” She stood up. “Do you remember what she ordered?”

“Pain au chocolat and a decaf cappuccino. Paid with cash. Didn’t leave a tip.”

Sasha grabbed a pain au chocolat from the display case. “Put it on my tab.”

“Good luck.”

Sasha stepped out from behind the counter and made her way across to the window. She hoped that Carolynn would look up and give her some kind of reaction that might help gauge her mood. As she stepped closer, she saw Carolynn’s eyes focus on her in the reflection in the window. Carolynn turned and looked back at her with cold eyes. “What are you doing here?”

“I work here,” Sasha said and placed the little bag with the pastry on the table.

“And that?” she asked, sneering at it.

“A peace offering. I heard you like pain au chocolat.”

Carolynn peered into the bag and then slid it into her purse. “What do you want?”

“Nothing. I’ve just been wondering how you were doing after New Year’s.”

Carolynn looked as though she believed that about as much as it was true. “Yeah, right.”

“And I wondered if you’d talked it over with Naomi.”

“If I had, she would have told you,” Carolynn said, looking directly at her. “Unless …” she began to smile. And then she laughed. “Oh, this is good.”

“What?”

“You haven’t talked to her.”

“No actually. But I’d like to.”

“I bet you would. Did she walk out on you too?”

Sasha frowned. “It’s hardly fair to say that she walked out on you.”

“Why not? I’m the one that’s willing to put it behind us. I was even willing to accept that she’d found someone else until …” she smiled again. “You poor, sorry bitch.”

Sasha was taken aback. “Hey, I tried to help you.”

“Really? Or were you just trying to get me out of the way?”

Both actually, Sasha thought but there was no point in poking an angry bear. “Can you tell me her last name, at least.”

“No.”

“What department is she in?”

“Nuh uh,” Carolynn said and stood up. She grabbed her keys off the table.
