I awakened late in the day, back at my camp. Beside me, written in a careful hand, in a very old-style script, was a note.

I put down the note with trembling hands and immediately felt my loss.

“Twenty-eight days until the next full moon,” I said as I looked at my phone’s calendar. “I won’t miss this for the world.”

Remembering what Tral – or, Trallis – said, I put my hand on my belly and thought the impossible, that I’d felt a little surge of energy. And then, off in the distance, I heard one howl, then a second, then a third, and then the wolves fell silent.

“Rell, Slate, Gareth,” I said under my breath. I waited for the last one, for my mate. For my alpha’s voice to join the chorus, but I never heard it.

I looked down at my feet, hoping nothing had happened. I heard a whimper and cast my eyes to the edge of the clearing. A great, black head. Pale, yellow eyes.

I could hardly stop the tears from welling up. Tral snapped at the air, howled for a moment, and then disappeared into the tangle of trees.
