“So he just plowed into them with his bike?” Griz said.

“You know Devil,” Wyatt said. “He’s freakin’ nuts.”

They were sitting in a bar on the outskirts of town, throwing back beers and wings and trying to relax. Despite the fact that the Linda situation was still weighing down on Wyatt heavily, he found that his spirits were lifting.

He’d told Griz everything, and he hadn’t abandoned Wyatt. He’d told Kate everything, and she hadn’t told him to go to hell. And at least the weight of carrying around his secret was a little lighter now that he’d confided in a few people.

“Sorry I couldn’t be there, man,” Griz said. “I had to help Dad with something.”

“No worries,” Wyatt said.

“Who was it?” Griz asked.

“Death’s Head,” Wyatt said.

“Seriously? Again?”

“You have no idea.”

“What do you mean?” Griz asked.

“It was the same three assholes that jumped me and Kate out by Benny’s place.”

“The balls on these guys,” Griz said. “Coming out to our territory like that, fucking with our people.”

“Well, if they keep this up, they’re going to end up on the disabled list,” Wyatt said. “They’ve each had the shit kicked out of them, hit with bikes, you name it.”

“Good,” Griz said. “We can’t let them keep pushing out this way. If they think they can get away with it, they’ll start coming out in numbers, and then we’ll really have to break some heads to make sure they get the message.”

“They’re just a symptom, Griz,” Wyatt said. “Linda is the disease. She’s the one we have to deal with.”

“Yeah, but even without Linda, if they get a sense that they can come out here with no blowback, they’ll never stop pushing it.”

Wyatt had to smile. Everyone thought Griz was nothing but slow and steady, and the big man cultivated that image, but Wyatt knew he was a lot smarter than he let on. He understood strategy and how people worked, better than most. Griz was just content to let people underestimate him.

“So what’s going on with Kate now?” Griz said.

“What’s going on, is, I don’t know, exactly,” Wyatt said. “I’m not all the way out, but I’m definitely not all the way back in.”

“At least that’s an improvement,” Griz said.

“Yeah,” Wyatt said. “Yeah, at least there’s a chance now.”

“We just need to sort out this Linda thing and get your life back to normal,” Griz said.

“What passes for normal in my life, anyway,” Wyatt said, but he had a smile when he said it.

He had to admit, things were looking up. He’d spilled his guts to Kate and his best friend, and neither one had thrown him aside. Neither one had abandoned him. Kate might not have taken him back, exactly, but she’d also let the door open to the possibility.

At this point, Wyatt would take what he could get.

The moment was spoiled by his phone ringing. The caller ID had the familiar skull and crossbones, and Wyatt let out a sigh when he saw it. One night. He couldn’t even have one night of peace.
