Savannah paused at the entrance to allow her eyes to adjust. The room was dimmed, allowing the mirrored ball to shoot its rays of light in a slow, dizzy-inducing circle. The three-piece band played something suitable for awkward shuffles on the dance floor and louder alcohol-generated conversations.
âShall we?â
She looked up at the elderly man with a shockingly full head of white hair, hooded brown eyes, and a closed-lip smile that did nothing to improve his face. Keith, CEO of Century Oil, waited for her reply as he patiently clasped her hand in the crook of his arm. It wasnât until he raised one bushy eyebrow that she realized sheâd hesitated stepping into the grand ballroom.
This is ridiculous. Youâre fine.
Except, she didnât feel fine. Her heart pounded, mouth dry, palms were sweaty. Every part of her wanted to run away, find a car that would take her home so she didnât have to stay here and smile up at a man she didnât like, didnât think was funny, and didnât need to pretend not to want to punch him in the face every time his hand âaccidentallyâ brushed across her butt.
Savannah looked down at her shoes, trying to draw the strength to smile, take a step, nod. Images came to mind. Ones of Baltimoreâgrease stains marking her as much as the poverty that was etched in her face. Margaritaâwearing long sleeve shirts in the summer to hide the marks her childrenâs father had left behind. Her motherâstanding on the border of their property looking out over land and roads she could never travel.
Then it was there. The absolute determined resolve that came from the hollowed place within her bones, nurtured far below in her gut, that had never once failed her. She found the courage to smile up at Keith, making sure the adoration reached her eyes.
By the look on his face, it had. He inhaled and full-smiled at her, showing a row of the straightest, whitest teeth that could only be fake.
She let him lead her as they walked across the roomâthe long way. His reasoning wasnât a shocker, and honestly couldnât blame him. They both needed to make sure they got what they wanted out of this deal. For her, it was a contract and a marriage. For him, it was admiration.
Savannah was easily the most beautiful woman in the room. It wasnât conceit. God hadnât given her much, but heâd gifted her a body men loved and a face women envied. In a manâs world, sheâd be a fool not to use it. So, if Keith wanted to show her off, sheâd play her part and let him.
She could feel the menâs appreciative stares and the womenâs spiteful ones. No surprise what theyâd say about her. The whispers later in the powder room or the gossip over the third glass of champagne. How the only way she couldâve made F&S Trucking successful was from her back. How she was all beauty, no brains. How she had no idea how to run a successful trucking company and had to marry a man who could.
