Chapter Sixteen

By the time Jordan made it to Callie’s it was nearly one in the afternoon. Several delayed deliveries kept her on endless calls to track down the missing materials. Then she’d discovered some shoddy work by one of the contractors and had needed a conversation with him to make sure it would be fixed in no uncertain terms. Both had set her behind several hours. Such was her life.

The day had turned warmer than usual for September, and she was glad to see the garage door was open, greeting her like a real homecoming. Callie’s car was parked along the side and her pulse picked up tempo. Jordan hadn’t been able to get the kisses they’d shared out of her mind. Callie had been caught off guard by the first, and so had Jordan. She’d acted on impulse and the result had only fueled her desire for more. Thinking about how flustered Callie was at the dinner table made her chuckle.

Jordan strapped on her tool belt and began humming a familiar tune, a testament to her upbeat mood. Callie appeared from the house carrying a large cooler with wheels and she rushed to help.

“Let me get that.” She was surprised at the weight. “What have you got in here?” She set it on the ground.

Callie shrugged. “I figured you’d been working all morning, so I made lunch.”

“Shit.” She’d told Callie she’d bring something to have with her leftover salad. “I forgot to get sandwiches. I’ll go get them now.”

Callie’s fingers wrapped around her wrist. “No need. I’ve got plenty of stuff in there.” Callie lightly tapped the cooler with her foot and grabbed the handle. “Let’s eat before we start.” She smiled and pulled the cooler behind her.

Jordan fell in step beside her. When she reached the doorway, she stopped in her tracks. There was a folding table with a checkered tablecloth and two chairs. A small vase of flowers sat in the middle of two place settings. “Wow.”

“It’s too nice to not take advantage of a little more of the weather.” Callie pulled the cart to a stop and started unpacking. There was last night’s salad, a large, wrapped charcuterie board, a basket of bread sticks, crackers, and artisan bread. The last thing she produced was a container of assorted olives. “I’m not sure if we should indulge, but I’ve got a really nice bottle of pinot grigio, or we can be mindful and have iced tea.”

As much as the idea of having a romantic lunch with Callie appealed to her, drinking wasn’t smart if they were going to use power tools. “I’d love to, but we should probably skip the alcohol.”

Callie nodded and produced two bottles of organic tea. “I wasn’t sure if you were going to make it today,” she said before setting out serving utensils.

She scooped a little salad onto her plate, then chose a few hunks of cheese. “Delivery issues were the bulk of my morning, then there was some work done on another
