This special card depicts perhaps baseball’s most exclusive club, “the 500 Club,” reserved for the few who launched 500 or more out of the park.

“It was exciting working up to that,” Banks said. “I didn’t think about it that much, but there was a lot of talk about it. People were pulling for me to do it. My daughter was getting a little irritated that it was taking so long. She said, ‘Dad, hit the home run so we can get the media off of our backs.’ I told her, ‘All right, Jen, I’ll get it over with.’ That day, against the Braves, May 12, 1970, in the [second] inning I hit the home run.” Number 500 came off Atlanta’s Pat Jarvis and was a signature Banks home run—a low line drive that sailed into the left-field bleachers and bounced back onto the field.

Mr. Cub’s teammates shared in his joy and his relief. “Ernie was pretty happy running around the bases, knowing he got to that milestone,” recalled Fergie Jenkins. “Back then, there were only a few hitters who had 500 home runs. It was a milestone for Ernie and for the Cubs. Everybody was pretty happy. The dugout was jumping around, patting everybody on the back, and happy for Ernie.”
