Chapter Ten

“You’re to be married?” Catherine said after the initial shock. “Good heavens, Lydia. How? You two can barely stand each other, let alone get married.”

It was true. Lydia and Lord Davies had never gotten on, and their relationship even had some notoriety. They were known to dislike each other, engaging in verbal sparring matches all over England, at balls, the theatre, and even one particular instance in front of the National Art Gallery where Lord Davies had somehow ended up in the fountain. No one had seen anything except an incredibly pleased Lydia walking away from the wet lord, who had glowered at the smirking Lydia. He had gotten revenge, when a week later, Lydia had been swarmed by a flock of pigeons in Hyde Park. Lord Davies had ripped open a very stubborn bag of seed all over her.

Accidentally, of course.

To be sure, there were never two people who shouldn’t marry more than Lydia and Lord Davies. Yet here they were, engaged.

“We are not getting married,” Lydia said as she let her sister escort her to the library. “We’re just engaged. It’s all over the papers.”

“Why are you engaged if you’re not going to be married?” Alex asked as they entered the library. He went to pour a brandy and handed it to Lydia, who looked more surprised than she should have that he was in the room with them.

“De Greaves,” Lydia said, taking the brandy. “I didn’t think you would be … around.”

It was a hint, Catherine noted, that Lydia wished to speak in private. One that the smiling American either didn’t notice or didn’t care to acknowledge.

“Think of me as nothing more but a fly on the wall.”

“My lord, I…” Lydia looked between the baron and her sister and seemingly saw something that Catherine didn’t. “I see. Well, I could do worse than tell you. It’s why I came here. Edward would have me quartered if he found out.” She sniffled. “When he finds out…”

“Finds out about what?” Catherine asked.

Lydia took a deep breath and then a large gulp of brandy. Instantly, she began to cough, her eyes watering as the stinging liquor burned her throat.

“Easy, my lady,” Alex said, taking the glass to refill it. He handed it back to her. “It’s to be sipped, slowly.”

“I’m fine.” She coughed before taking another breath. “Really, it was Lord Davies who started it,” she began, her brow furrowed as she looked down at the glass in her hands. “He was so terribly rude to Constance last year. She’s not like me, or even you, Catherine. She is quiet and impossibly shy and has absolutely no confidence in herself. Davies doesn’t ever dance with unattached girls, and none of the matrons would let him near their daughters, but of course, he finds great pleasure in pestering me every chance he gets. Last year, he cornered me, and Constance was close by, though hidden around a pillar in the Earl of Tasker’s ballroom. He wouldn’t leave me alone. I
