another day in paradise

125 Days to Go

Barbara Dunn arrived late at the office, as she had just returned from attending Doctor Michael’s funeral service. She stepped into the foyer and stopped, almost in a daze. She felt alone and weak.

“Barb, I’m so sorry for your loss” She looked up into the Director’s broad face.

“Thank you sir”

“Barb, I understand that you’re in mourning, but when you can, I need to talk to you regarding some urgent business” He asked politely, as he walked on.

“Give me an hour sir”

Before she could blink, the Director was gone. She casually took the stairs to the third floor.

“Morning Linda...”

“Morning Barb! Your mail and tea is waiting for you in your office”

“Thanks Linda...oh, give me a minute to settle in and then please come see me.”

Barbara entered her office, plopped into her high back chair and for a moment faded into oblivion. Peter’s sudden death, the message on her machine and the current disasters flashed through her mind. Linda walked in.

“Sit Linda. How you my friend?”

“Under the circumstances, I’m hanging in there”

“Linda, I never mentioned this but the same day that Peter died, he tried to call me. He left a message saying that I should meet him at the office as he had figured out how to stop the disasters...and now he’s gone!”

“He never mentioned anything else?” Linda asked quietly.

“Nothing...and this is why I’m unable to come with terms with my loss...why did I miss his call?”

“Barb, I’ll speak to Naveshan. Perhaps he may be able to arrive at a plausible explanation.”

“Thanks Linda...oh shit, I almost forgot, the Director wants to see me.”

Barbara slipped out the office and within five minutes was seated in the waiting room.

“Miss Dunn, the Director is ready to see you now.”

“Thanks Lucy”

The Director’s office resembled a bookstore from the early twenties. The walls were adorned with the most outrageous paintings, and his oak table was enormous. The Director sat with his back turned to the door, and motionlessly looked out onto the harbor down below. Barbara stood in the middle of the room, almost waiting for something sinister to happen, but the Director never moved, and so Barbara decided to clear her throat to get his attention. He swung around, sadness etched all over his face.

“Please take a seat Barb.”

“Are you ok sir?” Barbara could genuinely feel his pain.

“I’m promoting you to lead scientist. Your first duty will be to get in touch with Shannon at the National Observatory and get a status report.”

“I’ll attend to it immediately.”

“Barb, I have such small children. How can God allow this to happen?”

“It’s truly unfair sir...but just have faith.”

He turned his chair and once again looked out the window. Barbara stood up and silently left his office.

As Barbara exited the lift she could see all her staff fixated on the TV. She drew nearer and could hear the TV anchor talking.

“Good day and welcome to ‘ Live with Nellie’, today we will be chatting to Pastor Neville Knox from the Pentecostal Ministry in Alabama.
