CHAPTER 28

Jen

Zack and Jen sat at the Coffee Hut. Jen was drinking an iced breve, and Zack an iced mocha. It had been a couple days since Zack and Paulie had been over for dinner, and when Zack saw Jen leaving the office, he had offered to buy her coffee.

“It was really nice to go to church. Thanks for inviting me. The people seem so genuine. The church has so many types of ministries; everyone can find a place to fit in.”

They started discussing the sermon when Jen’s phone signaled that she had a message from Paulie. She started to read it and gasped.

Zack looked over and saw the blood drain from her face. He grabbed her hand and asked what was wrong.

“Paulie’s in trouble.” She showed him the text: “911—I have to go home for a visit. There are people there that listen to me. I am fine. I have some directions for you to take care of my house. Call me when you can talk to me.”

Zack looked at Jen questioningly. “What—”

Jen cut him off. “Paulie and I had a code when we were younger. His parents were older, and sometimes Paulie would get overwhelmed. When that would happen, he would send me a nine-one-one message and say he was going home. If his parents saw it, they would not understand it. I knew it meant he was upset, and he was going to his tree house. The tree house fell down several years ago, but I think he is telling me he is in his safe room, and some people came to his house. His statement about people there who listen to me means he thinks someone may have bugged his house. I have to get home and call him.” Jen stood up to leave. CD was standing there on alert. He knew something was wrong.

“I’m coming with you. Do we need to go to Paulie’s?”

“No, he is telling me to stay away for now. I can use my encrypted phone. I just need to get home to call him.”

Encrypted phone? Who the heck was this woman?

Zack got up and went outside with her. His car was in front of the coffee shop, so he motioned for her to get in. “This will be faster, and we can come back and pick up your car later.” He put CD in the back while he got into the front seat.

When they arrived at Jen’s, she jumped from the car, and Zack signaled for her to go ahead while he let CD out. Jen quickly put the code in, opened the door, and headed straight to her safe room. Zack followed. He noted she was doing something on the computer.

“This will make it safe to talk with Paulie even if they have somehow compromised his phone.” She pushed in his number. “Paulie, Paulie, it is OK. Tell me what happened.” Jen listened for a few minutes. “Do you feel safe, Paulie? Are your sure you want to stay there?” Jen relaxed and then perked up.
