Professional and businesspeople who write awkward, wordy and indirect—that is, passive—sentences often do so in the mistaken belief that this is typical professional style. The following awkward construction of 23 words does not equate with appropriate legal writing style. It is merely bad writing. Before: With respect to the handgun industry, rather it is the result of actions taken by third parties which renders them instrumentally dangerous.

After: Third-party actions make guns dangerous.
