Chapter 21
The next day, Emery was a bundle of nerves. She couldnât tell if it was from the date, or from everything else that had transpired the night before. Regardless, she felt as if she had a whole pot of coffee that morning, and when she went to class with Grayson, she couldnât stop fidgeting.
Professor Aldridge was going over the tests that morning and Emery was grateful for that. Not only did it help keep her mind off of her upcoming date, but it also made her think about the future. She had made the highest grade in the class. Before handing out the tests, Professor Aldridge brought up a chart on his projector showing the classâ grades. Of course, no one was called out by name, but most of the grades were in the C range or lower. There were five students who had made higher than a C. Emery was one of two people who had made an A.
As Professor Aldridge handed out the tests, she found out that Grayson had made the other A. She was happy about that because they had studied their asses off for that test. He flashed a smile as he showed her the 95 A on the top of his test paper. Emery grinned deviously as she held up the 97 A on hers. Grayson rolled his eyes and Emery had to stifle a laugh. She thought Professor Aldridge would call them out for making a disturbance, butâto Emeryâs surpriseâwhen she looked over to him, he had a small smile on his face as well.
When Emery flipped through the test to see the ones she had missed, she stopped on the question about psychology professions. This question was supposed to be free points basically, but she was hung up on it. It read: âWhich profession treats children, helping themâamong other thingsâovercome the challenges and emotional hurdles that come with traumatic experiences?â
The answer was simple: a child psychologist. Emery had gotten that one right, of course, but that wasnât what kept her focused on it. The way that Professor Aldridge worded the question felt like it was someone that she needed in her life after what had happened. She had been to therapists but she never kept up with it. She made excuses to her family members that she didnât need one, that she didnât want one. Emery probably did need one in hindsight, but she never felt like it could have helped. They wouldnât understand her. They wouldnât understand the pain.
Why, then, was she drawn to a child psychologist? Maybe it was because she had it all wrong. Maybe the whole reason people got into therapy and psychology professions was to give people the help that they themselves had never had.
âYou ready to go, Em?â Grayson asked.
Emery noticed all of the shuffling around her. Class was over and she had spent the whole time daydreaming about the future. That was something she had never done before. Change was what had scared her the most before the accident.
