Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.

–MARK TWAIN

It is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend.

–WILLIAM BLAKE

To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.

–WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

I wake up every morning at nine and grab the morning paper. Then I look at the obituary page. If my name is not on it, I get up.

–BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

THAN conj. Introduces the second part of a comparison.

THEN adv. 1. At that time in the past. 2. Next in a series or order. 3. At another time in the future.

Wine is sweeter than vinegar.

My brother is taller than I. (taller than I am tall)

I once lived in that house, but that was then and now is now.

First preheat the oven, and then bake the pizza.

One day I’ll be discovered by Hollywood. Then life will be perfect!

USAGE NOTES

A common mistake is to use the wrong pronoun after than. To avoid this problem mentally supply the missing verb. Correct: She walks faster than he (… faster than he walks). Incorrect: She walks faster than him (… faster than him walks).

MEMORY TRICKS

• CONNECT: than → compare.

• CONNECT: then → next.
