Chapter Ten

Wallis tried not to watch Jean during lunch, but it was hard. Thank Heaven, it was attraction and nothing more. At least that’s what he kept telling himself.

They returned to the library and cleaned up their work areas. They still had to build another middle shelf unit and secure it. If they worked the rest of the afternoon, they might get it done.

“Mr. Darling?” Billy asked.

Wallis grabbed his hammer. “Hmm?”

“Why does the town have to have a dance?”

“Dance?” Conrad said. “I dare say, I forgot all about it. How’s the planning going, young man?”

Billy turned to him, looking disgusted. “My ma has been working on her dress and talking about it non-stop. She’s about to drive my pa plumb loco.”

Wallis smiled. “And why is that?”

“On account she tells him he has to dance with her.” Billy shook his head in dismay. “I hope I don’t have to dance with anyone. What a sight that would be.”

Wallis and his brothers laughed. “Billy, when you’re a little older you won’t mind dancing with a pretty girl.”

Billy stuck his tongue out. “Yecch! Girls.”

Wallis laughed again. He wished he felt the same way right now. Unfortunately, he didn’t. Jean was driving him plumb loco. The thought of going to the dance with her was both exciting and terrifying. He could well imagine what it would be like to spin her around the grassy dance floor, which caused a chill to run through his body.

He tried to work, but his mind kept returning to thoughts of dancing with Jean. If this kept up, he’d be worthless the rest of the day. Thankfully Jean hadn’t returned yet. She must be helping Dora with the dishes. But when she came back, he’d have to do his best to avoid her. Attraction was one thing, dealing with powerful feelings another. He didn’t want them and had better stay busy, or his attraction might get the better of him.

When Jean showed up, she wasn’t alone. Letty was with her. “Oh, my,” Letty whispered as she stepped into the library. “This is wonderful!” She went to the nearest shelves and ran her fingers along the spines. “And look at all the books that were donated.”

“I know,” Jean said with a cheerful smile. “I can’t wait to get more.”

“Leave yourself some shelf space,” Sterling advised as he approached. He went straight to Letty and kissed her on the cheek. “Nice, isn’t it?”

“It’s just what this town needs.” Letty smiled back. “I hope you don’t mind, but I’m stealing Jean for a time.”

“What?” Wallis said as he approached. “What are you doing?”

“We’re supposed to be having a dance Saturday, remember?” Jean said.

Wallis stiffened. “That soon?”

She nodded. “Have you forgotten?”

“Actually, Billy just reminded us,” Conrad said. “Poor Oliver. I do hope he’ll be able to attend.”

“This means we’ll have to borrow Mr. Smythe’s horse and mower,” Irving said. “We’ll want the grass short if we’re going to use that area for dancing.” He looked at Conrad. “We’re still using the meadow behind the captain’s saloon?”

Conrad nodded.
