Dick Edmiston volunteered as a mechanic assisting the Chinese air force as a Flying Tiger. The American force of Flying Tigers defended China against Japanese forces. Although these soldiers made three times Army salary, they scrounged for food locally. One time, they received a shipment of vitamins, and he stuffed himself with vitamins. He is pictured here beside his 1943 Aeronca US Army L-3B, which cost him $6,500. (Courtesy of Robert Edmiston.)

The successes of the Flying Tigers gave hope to Americans that they would eventually succeed against the Japanese. Officially, the Tigers destroyed 296 enemy aircraft. On July 4, 1942, the American Volunteer Group (the official name of the Tigers) disbanded and became part of the 23rd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Forces, which was later absorbed into the US Fourteenth Air Force with Gen. Claire Chennault as commander. (Courtesy of Robert Edmiston.)
