Judge McCarthy on the bench at the Outagamie County Court House. This photo, portraying a hard-working jurist, was used in his 1946 campaign. WHS 47587. Creator unknown.

Although the sobriquet “Tail Gunner Joe” stayed with him, most of McCarthy’s work in the Pacific involved debriefing pilots like these just returned from a bombing run in the Solomons. WHS 32010. U.S. Marines.

In his 1946 campaign, Joe stopped in Manawa to see his former landlady, Mrs. Frank Osterloth, whom he dubbed his “second mother.” In his grocery store phase, she had urged him to go back to school. His skills as a retail campaigner were unparalleled. WHS 48264. Creator unknown.
