Killer in the Casino

A teenager killed a young girl in a casino restroom and pushed her body into the toilet, minutes after his friend walked in on the attack – and did nothing.

Casino’s attract a wide range of people and can be fun and dangerous at the same time. Some put down their entire wage packet while others enjoy a small flutter like they would on a national lottery, if enjoyed the right way and within personal limits, a casino can be an experience like no other.

On 25th May 1997, Labor Day weekend, Leroy Iverson took his seven-year-old daughter, Sherrice, and her 14-year-old half-brother, Harold, to Primm, Nevada for a break away. Their mother, waitress Yolanda Manuel stayed at home in Los Angeles.

That evening, Leroy went to the Primadonna Resort and Casino to play slots and blackjack. Leroy wasn’t addicted to gambling but enjoyed a bet every now and again, never normally winning big on the tables. Still, it was a pastime that suited him.

With no one to look after his children, Leroy took them to the casino with him. His son stayed with him most of the time but Sherrice was younger and wanted to play, as she had dressed up in a sailor outfit. On at least two occasions that evening, officials in the casino led Sherrice back to Leroy to look after.

But within minutes of being led back each time, Sherrice would run off to the video game section or play with adults who noticed her. One of those adults who took great interest in Sherrice was 18-year-old Jeremy Strohmeyer.

Little girl outfits

Born in 1978, Jeremy was raised in a damaging environment. His birth parents were both drug addicts and had a history of mental illness between them. His mother had been diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia and had been hospitalised at least 50 times.

Jeremy was taken into state care at a young age and adopted by new foster parents in Long Beach, California. They were never informed of why he had been removed from his parents, nor that they were suffering from combined drug and mental health issues.

As such, Jeremy had a predisposition for mental illness but it didn’t excuse his future behaviour. Despite his parentage, he found it easy to get girlfriends but had a fetish for dressing them up in little girl outfits to satisfy his sexual appetite.

On 25th May, Jeremy and his 17-year-old friend, David Cash, and David’s father, paid a visit to the Primadonna Resort and Casino, wearing baggy shorts and t-shirts. It wasn’t long before Jeremy set his sights on Sherrice, taken by the young girl’s playfulness and sailor costume.

At 4am, while Leroy was busy gambling, Jeremy asked Sherrice to play hide-and-seek with him. Later when detectives viewed the CCTV footage, it seemed entirely innocent; a young man playing with a young girl.

Nothing seemed overly untoward, until Jeremy told Sherrice that the only place she would be safe to hide was the ladies toilets. Not knowing what was to come, Sherrice ran away from Jeremy and hid where he had suggested.
