Chapter Seventeen

Word on the street was that Lynette had been messing around with Prophet from Hoover, and that was the reason Shoota killed her. But no one had proof of that, so for now, that’s all it was, a rumor. Only Sharp Shoota knew the real as far as the Sixties were concerned. Bridget, Lynette’s sister, didn’t think that Shoota killed her sister because that would be cold. The fact that Bridget and Lynette were extremely close also made her confident in believing that Shoota didn’t have anything to do with it. If Lynette was creeping around with Prophet, she would have told Bridget, that was something she was positive of. That’s another reason why she ignored the rumors about her sister and Prophet. But there was a nagging feeling in the back of her mind, and she wondered if Shoota could do something like that to the woman he loved. The only reason her family hadn’t gone after him was because of her, and she prayed she was right with her feelings and that he didn’t have anything to do with killing her sister and keeping her family at bay. If she found out that Shoota did kill Lynette or had anything to do with it, she would kill him herself. These were her thoughts as she began to get dressed to go put her sister to rest.

It was the morning of Lynette’s funeral, and she was on Big Shoota’s mind big time. Actually, his mind was all over the place. Ever since he murdered her, he’d been a nervous wreck. Not only was he scared out of his mind of the police having him as the prime suspect for the murder, it was also the combination of Lynette’s family swearing if they found out he killed her there would be hell to pay. His nerves were totally shot. He was snorting more and more cocaine since the murder was committed, and the more he snorted, the more paranoid he became. Killing people was nothing new to him, but Lynette was his woman, his world. Murdering her did something to him that he was unable to comprehend. For the first time, his crazy life, his conscience, was getting the best of him. He was hurting from his actions, and those feelings were completely foreign to him.

He sat at the dining-room table and snorted some more cocaine and sighed. He felt he needed to be extra high in order to deal with Lynette’s funeral. He didn’t want to go, but knew he had to attend the service or he would look guilty to those who felt he did kill Lynette. He knew that all eyes would be on him because the rumors had been swirling around the city ever since Lynette’s body had been found on the South Side. Even though he made it obvious to all of his people that he was on the warpath and blamed the Hoovers for killing Lynette, it didn’t change what everyone was thinking.
