Sixteen: Dante

My hand was still resting on Ronan’s arm when the worm broke through the stone at the far end of the cavern. I felt my grip tighten, my fingers digging into his skin. His eyes flicked in my direction for a moment before he turned back toward our quarry. I was glad to be hidden behind the crystal as the massive creature broke through the stone at last, rock and dust tumbling to the ground.

I felt my jaw slacken as I stared at the beast in front of me, much bigger than I’d anticipated. Its head was easily six feet tall, a perfectly circular mouth with row after row of sharp teeth rotating within. There were no eyes that I could see, but that didn’t seem to hinder its understanding of the environment around it. With a slow undulation, it began to push its way out of the tunnel behind it, sharp serrations carved into the stone where it had bored its way through. Its body was dark and fleshy, like an earthworm but with deep skin folds every few inches. Along its back were several crystalline spikes that looked as if they’d grown out of the body itself. I watched as it used them to gain purchase on the stone and force itself out into the open air.

Glancing to the other side of the clearing, I saw Torval, Kai, and the pair of humans hunker down. Kai’s hammer clinked lightly on the stone, the sound barely audible over the din of shifting stone. Suddenly the worm stopped, its head slowly turning in Kai’s direction. There were no eyes that I could see anywhere on its body, but it didn’t seem like it needed them. A low growl emanated from its body, the stones vibrating across the ground. The massive body slowly turned, shifting toward the other group and beginning its slow crawl across the open space.

Ronan tensed beside me as the worm approached, coming close to our hiding place as it headed toward the others. The folds of flesh scraped against the crystal spires, the stone creaking under the strain. A series of soft cracks reverberated through the space as the crystal spiderwebbed but held strong. It looked big enough to crush the creature should it fall, if only it would break.

Maybe I could help it along.

Motioning to Ronan to strike the stone, I slapped my hand against the smooth surface, muttering under my breath. The moment the magic left my fingertips, I felt the crystal react, the spell amplifying far beyond my original intention. A sudden heat erupted across my body, the spell twisting in my grasp. Instead of the spell, I’d cast, the crystal seemed to invade my mind, reading my true intentions. The moment it did, I heard a loud crack, a fissure erupting across the base of the spire. All at once, the heat faded away, and I felt myself slip back into my own awareness. I’d never felt anything like it before, but I knew then that the Masters hadn’t been lying about one thing.
