“You didn’t see the look in her eyes. Someone tried to make it so she wouldn’t remember, so she couldn’t remember.” David turned from his patio doors and started pacing the floor.

Mark watched David from a leather chair in the corner. “Is that possible?”

"Richard told me stories of those who managed to manipulate memories but he said it takes someone with a great deal of power to do so.” This was just what he needed, another threat to Nicole. Who could it be? Whoever they were they knew who she was, knew her family, but that didn’t narrow things down much.

“Yeah, I seem to remember hearing some stories about it, now that you mention it, but why would anyone want to make Nicole forget she saw them? Why would anyone be approaching her at all?”

“I don’t know. Do you think it has anything to do with the threats Richard received before his death?”

“That’s a possibility.” Mark tried once again to figure out who could have been behind that. After all these years, he was still no closer to an answer to that question. If the two incidents were connected, he couldn’t begin to know where to start.

“She also said the guy’s eyes looked like they were changing color.”

“Hum, that sounds like some kind of illusion. If anyone were powerful enough to get into a person’s head and manipulate memories, it would be a small chore to make someone see what they want them to see.”

“I guess that makes sense.”

“Well, there’s not much you can do until he shows himself again, and stop pacing! I feel like I’m watching a tennis game.”

David plopped down in a nearby chair. “Sorry, I just feel like I should be doing something.”

“I know, but aimless worrying is not the answer. Maybe Mara knows something. She was friends with Richard’s father before Richard was even born. She has known their family a long time.”

“I didn’t realize she was that old.” Despite his worry, his interest was peaked.

“Oh, I think that’s barely scratching the surface where Mara’s concerned.” Mark thought back on all the snippets of conversation he heard over the years. From conversations that stopped when he entered the room to vague references to situations past, he heard his fair share of names from the history books, as well as other hints to the vast complexity and longevity of Mara’s past. “I overheard a conversation once where she was talking to Richard about political situations in 15th century Europe. She seemed extremely well informed on the topic.”

“Really?” That could explain how she knew so much about everything. “Well, I’ll give it a try.”
