The full moon came on March 10th.

At compline, Lena called Magdalena to kneel at the front of the chapel. Lena began the litany of the saints. At its close, she went to stand before Magdalena.

“Sister Magdalena of the Theatine order of the Catherinites, having lived and abided by our rule in the period since your first vows, what is your desire?”

Head bowed, Magdalena responded, “With the help of God, I ask to profess my eternal vows to the order for the glory of God and for the service of the Church.”

Lena said, “May God, who created you and saved you and abides in you, now sustain you in your profession of final vows.”

Magdalena prostrated herself, and Lena sprinkled holy water over her. “Your religious consecration represents the eternal union between Christ and His Bride, the Church. Your vows commit you to imitate Christ’s totality of love and self-emptying, placing the Kingdom of God above all earthly considerations and offering the service of all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.”

Magdalena said, “Amen.”

“Do you vow poverty, to relinquish all material goods in this world for the sake of the Kingdom?”

“I do.”

“Do you vow chastity, promising the powers of your body to God alone for the sake of the Kingdom?”

“I do.”

“Do you vow to resist heresy in all its forms, to resolve to uphold the law of God as defined by the Church and all her doctrines and all her dogma?”

“I do.”

“Do you vow obedience to the pope, on whose orders we serve for the sake of the Kingdom?”

“I do.”

Sister Lena had her rise, then placed her hands on Magdalena’s head. “Heavenly Father, we ask you to bestow on your daughter Magdalena the crown of virginal excellence, that as she sacrifices her body and her will here on earth, that even more may be added unto her in the Kingdom of Heaven. We ask this through the merits of Jesus Christ Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.”

“Amen.”

Lena stepped back. Her eyes were glistening, a realization that shook Magdalena’s heart.

Lena smiled. “Congratulations, Sister Magdalena.”

The other nuns applauded, and when Magdalena turned, Chiara glowed with joy.
