Chapter Seven

As we all dug into the food, I couldn’t help but think what a motley crew this was.

First we had Liam and his mother. Gerry had raised her son by herself, working very hard to provide a good life for them. Not only that, but she was secretly a witch.

Then we had Deacon and his mother. She had raised him with every advantage. She was cold, rich, and calculating. To this party she had happened to bring her brother, who seemed kind, bumbling, and oblivious. I had no idea what he would have been like as a dinner guest had his best friend not just been murdered.

After that we had a gathering of singles, no less random for having that characteristic in common. I had no idea how Lindsay had made it into the group, and I was trying not to hold the window competition against her. Mintwood had a window display contest every year, and last time around Liam’s Twinkle Costume Shop had won. The Artist Art Gallery, where Lindsay had her art, had been the front-runner, and the competition hadn’t been entirely friendly.

I was also trying not to hold fact that she had once flirted with Jasper against her. It was the holidays, so for once I should try being the bigger person. Shouldn’t I? I didn’t particularly like it, but practice helps.

Or so I’ve been told.

After Lindsay came Jasper himself. A couple of weeks ago he had made an offhand comment about how his grandfather always liked to spend the holidays somewhere warm. Sometimes Jasper went with him and sometimes he stuck around. Given that he was trying to build his cottage on the lake, he had decided to stick around this year to keep an eye on the place. He also plowed for several friends, so it was pretty lucky for them that he had stayed in town.

Personally, I was delighted that he was around for the holidays. Had he gone with his grandfather, I would have missed him terribly. It amazed me that we’d had a solid relationship for several months already. The fact that his family—in the person of his grandfather—hated me and that I had a wand hadn’t prevented us from being happy together.

Lastly, there were my roommates. If you had told me ahead of time how much happiness and personal growth I would experience from living with two high school friends, I would have said you were crazy. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d end up living with Greer Dice and Charlie Silver.

First of all, I had expected Greer to start backpacking through Europe and never return. I figured she’d buy a cozy café somewhere in Greece or Italy and settle down saying sarcastic things to people who hadn’t had their coffee yet that morning. Possibly in English, so some of them wouldn’t even understand what she was saying.

Charlie I would have expected to move to the big city chasing a big-time reporting career.

Maybe they would both
