Chapter 11

“So, that was one of the scariest experiences of my life.” Crosby didn’t glance at me as he said it; he kept his eyes on the road. Tension sat in the fine lines around his eyes and the curve of his jaw.

I considered his words. For me, going into the water had been momentarily terrifying, but when it became apparent that I could breathe, things had calmed down. It hadn’t lasted long, and I was on the surface again. But what if it had been Crosby going into the water and me waiting on the bank? I imagined how it would feel, standing there helpless, not able to see what was going on well under the surface.

The time had probably stretched out much longer for him than me.

I laid a hand on his thigh. “I’m sorry.”

His expression thawed some, and he spared me a quick glance. “If something happened to you while I was standing right there...”

“I understand. Nothing happened to me. Xin was a nice Fae fish, and he helped me find what I was looking for.” I thought about the rock and the runes on it. I wondered if I’d done the right thing showing it to Crista, who’d destroyed it. Now, I didn’t have it to try and check out where it had come from.

I groaned and dropped back on the headrest. “It’s starting to feel like we may never have a normal life.” I said the words with a joking tone, but the meaning poked at my heart. Even though I hadn’t recognized them for a long time, I’d had feelings for Crosby forever. Now that we were together, I wanted so much to have normal times. Hang out, go on dates, talk long into the night. Instead, I was skipping back and forth between our dimension and the Fae realm, wading into cold water with a strange fish type that doesn’t occur in the human world, and trying to clear my friend—who turned out to be a fairy—of double murder charges.

A sigh escaped my chest before I knew it was coming.

It was Crosby’s turn to lay a hand on my leg. “Hey. I knew I wasn’t signing up for a normal life. I signed up anyway. And I don’t regret that I did. Who cares about normal when I can have you?”

His words made my chest swell, the bruise on my heart from the earlier jab seeming to pop out and heal as they floated across it. “I suppose there is no such thing as normal anyway, right? Everyone has their own kind of crazy going on. But I do feel like I have a little more than is necessary on my decision list right now.”

“Red River?”

“Yep. And this witch committee thing. I don’t know what to do about either one of them.”

His lips tightened. “You’d have to do a lot of traveling for the committee, right?”

“I guess so. I don’t know how much, but yeah, I think there’s a fair amount of it involved.
