Siobhan

I took my time washing the grease from my fingers and tried to calm my nerves. I’d wanted to tell Alys about my curse, one that had nothing to do with our recently developed magic.

It was nuts, how I could fall right back into the swing of things with Alys and Maeve but still feel like such an outsider. Tony hadn’t recognized me. I’d been back for Alys’s wedding and Maeve’s, and when Philip and Arabella were born. But I’d felt like an outsider from the moment I walked into Tony’s.

Not that anything had changed. Tony wasn’t big on trying anything new. While the place was clean it still sported the faded black and white checkerboard linoleum, the same vinyl tablecloths, the same red caddies that held salt, pepper, dried red pepper flakes, and parmesan cheese.

It didn’t matter what Alys said. She wasn’t as closed off to the idea of a happily ever after as she pretended to be. Of course, a week ago she had been married to Kyle— that steaming turd—so why wouldn’t she be against the idea of being in a committed, long-term relationship when that was her only experience?

It was the one thing in the world—other than my sisters and to find out what had happened to our mom—that I wanted.

The one thing I couldn’t have.

But I could make a life here. Get a job. Demo’ing that house had been fun, even if my shoulders were sore. Before Alys had shown up, Maeve had walked me through her design concept for the Mid-Century Modern, showing me tile samples and asking my opinion on fabrics. She was going to need some help holding up her end of things. Maybe Alys would be willing to take me on?

As soon as the thought rose, I dismissed it. The last thing I wanted were my sisters treating me like some sort of charity case. I would have to find my own job and my own place to live, then I could help out with the business if Maeve asked.

I stalled in the bathroom long enough for Alys to pick up the tab and then pushed the door open.

Right into someone’s face.

“Oh God,” I said to the man who had been heading toward the men’s room at the exact wrong moment. “I am so sorry. I should have pulled instead of pushed.”

“Siobhan?”

I blinked. “Do I know you?”

He straightened and familiar odd eyes met my own.

“You,” I breathed as I recognized the man from last night. “Sebastian, right?”

He was pinching the bridge of his nose but managed a passible nod.

“Is it broken?” I urged him toward the wooden barstools and pulled one out for him.

“I don’t think so.” He sat on the stool and delicately probed the area around his face.

“What happened?” Alys had been standing over by the register, check in hand, but she caught sight of us and hurried over. “Sibby?”

“I hit him with the bathroom door.”

“Damn it, Tony,” Alys muttered as she removed a fistful of napkins from the nearby dispenser and thrust them into Sebastian’s hands.
