Deacon set his ex-girlfriend down, as graciously as he could. “Ah, Bonnie—” he laughed awkwardly. “Uh, I wasn’t expecting that sort of reception from you.”

“What, you think I’m not going to be head over heels to see my favorite ex-boyfriend?! Tapa Gurta, Tapa Gurta!”

“Tapa what now?” I said, one brow raised so high on my head it was nearly at my hairline.

“Tapa Gurta!” Bonnie beamed; a smile plastered across her face that she probably imagined was infectious. I looked at her and certainly got the impression infectious, but not in the good way. She reminded me of those people in horror films that are hosts to alien life forms, ones that don’t quite understand how interaction works. Her eyes were wide and mostly unblinking, her bright blue pupils ringed with moats of crazy white. “It means warm welcome in Sanskrit!”

“I see…” I said in bewilderment. “Is the dead language of Sanskrit making a comeback or something?”

Bonnie threw back her head and laughed, acting as if I’d told the funniest joke in the world. “Comeback? That’s a good one!” Bonnie put a hand on Deacon’s shoulder to steady herself, wiped a tear from her eyes and shook her head. “Oh Deacon, she’s a lively one. I can’t even be mad that you’ve picked such a fine woman as your new girlfriend, just look at her, she’s beautiful, I could just kill her!”

“Now wait a second—” Deacon began, and I knew he was going to begin with the she’s not my girlfriend, spiel, which was technically true, in his mind at least.

“Bonnie, we didn’t just turn up here for any old reason,” I said, steering the conversation towards our goal. “We were actually wondering if you could help us. We’re interested in looking at an old cold case.”

“Can’t imagine that’ll be too much trouble!” she said through her unwavering perfect smile. “Of course you’d have to go through daddy first and, well—” Bonnie let out a long whistle. “Now Deacon, he wasn’t too happy the way you ran out on me. Once upon a time I was furious too, for a long time I wanted to kill you!” She laughed again, and I was starting to wonder if this woman was actually manic. “But I’ve moved on. My heart has healed, and I’ve forgiven you. As they say in india, Jala ata Setu!” Our blank expressions prompted to hurriedly add, “Oh, that means water under the bridge!”

“Maybe just say that one then,” I suggested.

All of a sudden, a booming voice filled the quiet police station. We looked over and saw a huge ruddy man in his late fifties, a sheriff star upon his shirt and a pristine silver buzzcut on his bowling ball sized head.

“Well, I’ll be a lily blossom, look what the cat dragged in, Deacon Long!” Deacon remained frozen as the huge sheriff walked over, and I realized this had to be Billy, the Sheriff of Babonix. Deacon said things hadn’t ended on good terms after ending his relationship with Bonnie, Billy’s daughter.
