AN OPEN MIND IS A PATH TO AN OPEN HEART

The woman woke in the morning and found Jacob finishing his prayers. She offered him coffee and asked if she might speak with him. Jacob put the coffee cup on the chair next to the bed and thought of the cup of tea he drank when his house was his home.

“You seem like someone I can talk to,” said the woman, hoping Jacob would agree with her estimation.

Jacob invited the woman in by opening his heart.

“Jacob,” the woman began, challenging her doubts by speaking quickly, “when I try to talk with my husband, he tells me to leave him alone. And when I leave him alone, he tells me I’m not giving him any attention. What should I do?”

“Perhaps you have to decide whether you are looking for love or searching for reason,” said Jacob.

“I don’t understand,” said the woman.

“Understanding love is different than being in love,” said Jacob. “Love is not only an affair of the mind.”

“Well,” said the woman, “my husband and I need a miracle.”

“A miracle,” said Jacob, “is our capacity to bury hate and grow love.”

“But our love is tired,” said the woman. “We’ve grown weary of each other.”

“We usually fall asleep in our relationships,” said Jacob, “not because we are tired of love but so we can dream of new relationships. Life, however, is a work in progress, and love’s challenge is not to see people as they once were but as they might be. People who grow old can also grow love.”
