It was a little amusing, but since my arrival in Chronikos and my subsequent bonding to Cassia, Iâd noticed an interesting shift in my magic. Prior to my agreement with Kerryn and Emmerich, my beast had identified them as rivals, but weâd more than surpassed that. I didnât know how or at which point it had happened, but we instinctively moved around one another, and I could almost always tell what they were thinking or planning to do.
For this reason, when Kerryn decided to lure out whatever creature was lurking underneath the wendigo by using himself as bait, it was easy to fall in line with his plan. When the hand emerged from beneath the frozen soil, I used my magic to take hold of the creature. Kerryn leaped back, avoiding its hold in deference to Cassiaâs earlier warnings.
I expected to encounter some resistance from our would-be attacker, but no such thing happened. Instead, whoever was underneath the snow almost seemed to... welcome my touch?
A feeling of familiarity assaulted my senses, and the frozen ground cracked under the pressure of my magic. A female figure crawled out from the created gap, clutching her chest like she was suffocating. âDear gods,â she whispered. âThat was horrible. What is... What is going on?â
My eyes widened as I took in the identity of the woman who had been under the ice. It was... It was Cassia.
She slumped down onto the frozen ground, clutching her own arms, shaking, her teeth chattering. Memories assaulted my mind, flashes of the time we had found her in her meditation chamber when she had been struggling with a power she could not control. Weâd been able to help her then, although it had been a close call. Had something similar happened now?
Every single instinct in my body started to scream, and within instants, Kerryn and I both shifted into our humanoid forms. We rushed to her side and dropped to our knees next to her, desperately attempting to see where she was injured. âWhat is the matter, treasure?â Kerryn asked. âWhere are you hurt?â
âR-Raijin?â Cassia stammered. âIs that you? How... How did I get here? Where... Where am I? What happened?â
I shared a befuddled, panicked look with Kerryn. Neither of us had any way of answering that question. Worse still, my magic couldnât provide me with any answers regarding Cassiaâs condition. There seemed to be some kind of veil around her, scrambling my attempts to check on her wounds. I was no healer, but that still shouldnât have happened.
âCassia, you need to tell us where you are injured,â Kerryn said. âTell us, so we can help you.â
âI donât know,â Cassia replied. âI... It just hurts. Everything. Where is... Where is Emmerich?â
That was another excellent question. Weâd left our soulmate less than an hour ago, with our fellow dragon and the nisse, and they had headed into an entirely different direction, to help the amarok pack. What had gone wrong? Why was she suddenly here?
Snegurka. Snegurka mustâve done something. Gods be damned, we shouldâve never left her on her own, with only Emmerich.
