Chapter Seven
Saturday went by too fast and before he knew it Tyler was walking slowly across the yard of the Elkton ranch to pick Angelina up for their date. The sun was setting, but he could see well enough. Heâd had to park by the main gate and was now walking over to the bunkhouse. He was limping more than usual and he stopped once to adjust his tie while holding a bouquet of roses in the same hand. Unfortunately, his left hand wasnât closing any better today than it had been and was useless for either task.
He felt like a boy on his first date. His mother had insisted on ironing a shirt for him although he assured her he could handle it. Wade had brought over some woodsy cologne that he wanted Tyler to try because Amy said any woman would fall at his feet when she smelled it. Jake had come by then to shake his head, muttering something about fools, before he went out to his pickup and brought back this bouquet of long-stem red roses wrapped in gold lace paper with a white plastic heart stuck in the middle of it for no good reason except sentiment.
Tyler had tried to stop the flow of help, protesting that he knew how to dress himself for a date. He could buy his own flowers and chose his own cologne. Finally, he had to grit his teeth so he didnât say anything that would hurt his family. He wasnât used to accepting help from anyone. The truth was, he believed a man had to be able to make it on his own in this life and he didnât know what to do with all their offers of assistance.
One thing he had learned at his memorial service was that he shouldnât push people away when they wanted to come closer. He had prided himself for a long time on not needing anyone else, but when a man faced his death that solitude was not particularly comforting. He wished whoever had sent him that wreath would come up and tell him so he could repay him or her and be done with it. The thought of having an unknown friend like that was making him look at everyone differently since he didnât know which one had been the giver.
He had gotten a call from Clyde a few hours ago and Tyler was going to need to talk business with Angelina tonight, too. He had made arrangements for their date at the café so he hoped to get the talk about the investigation on Angelinaâs father out of the way before they even ordered their meal. That would be one nice thing about the screen around their table. No one could eavesdrop on what he had to say.
Tyler was so preoccupied that he was halfway to the bunkhouse before he stopped and looked around. The barn was to his left and he recognized the smells in the corralâlast yearâs alfalfa hay and horses.
