Nate opened the front door and backed away as Cooper stepped

inside. The ride over had been silent, both of them seeming lost in thought. Nate knew it was still potentially dangerous to open himself up to Cooper, but he’d already hurt the man enough not to. Cooper

deserved a little benefit of the doubt in the very least.

Cooper turned after Nate shut the door and flipped the bolt home.

“Why am I here, Nate?”

“I wanted you here. Close.”

“Scared I’ll run?”

Nate took a few tentative steps. “Nope. But if Pete’s as nutty as

you say he is, I don’t know what’ll happen when I take you up there.”

Cooper didn’t say anything for a moment. “I worked the Triple

M today, rustling some cattle. I’m bone weary and dirty. Not sure

I’m going to make good company.”

“You’re welcome to use my shower. I’ll rustle us up some

dinner while you’re in there.”

Cooper just stared. “I don’t need your pity, Nate.”

Nate knew there was a sorrow he felt… a sorrow for the child

Cooper had been. A child beaten and bruised and not shown love.

He ached inside after seeing those pictures, but he didn’t pity Cooper.

“It’s not pity. Just a need to show you a little compassion.”

“Isn’t that one and the same?”

Nate didn’t know how to answer. Maybe it was. “You know

where the bedroom is. Bathroom is stocked with fresh towels. There are some clean sweats in the bottom drawer of my dresser that you’re welcome to use. Might be a little big, but they’ll do for tonight.”

Cooper nodded and turned, heading for the bathroom. Nate

checked the cabinets and fridge, trying to figure out something other than his usual microwave dinners to cook. He heard the water turn on in the bathroom and fought the urge to go in there and slip under the spray with his cowboy. Cooper had been used enough. Nate wasn’t

going to push the man into anything right now.

Tonight, he just wanted to be a friend. It was the least he could

do.

Luckily he found a pound of hamburger in the freezer and had the

fixins for spaghetti. He didn’t cook much, not with it being just him at the house. His usual dinners were either from the microwave, the diner, or his mother’s table. After thawing the burger, he fried it and tossed it into a pot of prepared sauce before putting on another pot for pasta.

During that time, he heard the water stop in the bathroom and his

mind went to visions of Cooper naked, lying across his bed. Even a

year later, the images were seared into his memory. He bit back the rising lust, trying to remember he wasn’t pushing himself on Cooper.

“I expected you’d come shower with me.”

Nate spun to see Cooper standing at the edge of the kitchen in

only a towel. Water trailed down his firm chest and abs, tracing the muscles Nate still wanted his hands on. He dragged his gaze away

from Cooper and tossed the pasta into the boiling water. “I was

making dinner, like I said.”

“Maybe I’m not hungry for food.
