We donât stay out too late. A girl canât go clubbing too often, after all. It starts to wear on you.
I return home before midnight, deciding to do some writing. I end up falling asleep with my laptop on my bed, waking up to the sun streaming in.
When I meander to the kitchen, not feeling too bad since I only had oneâI know! One! âdrink last night, I notice the kitchen and living room are empty. Thatâs strange. Gemmaâs usually up and clanging around by this time.
Mostly out of curiosity and partially out of a need to set things right, I amble down the hallway toward Gemmaâs room.
The door is wide open. Gemmaâs dressedâand packing.
âWhatâs going on?â I ask, confused. Maybe sheâs got a business trip or something.
Gemma looks up at me, anger in her eyes. âReally? You have to ask? Whatâs it look like?â
I shake my head. âI donât know. Look, I know last night was crazy, but you have to admit, you said you werenât going to throw any more parties.â
âYou know whatâs crazy?â she asks, stopping her shoving of clothes in boxes to walk toward me, pointing a finger like Iâm a child being lectured. I feel put on the defensive. âYou. You expect me to live here and be your perfect little roommate like Avery. Newsflash. Iâm not freaking thirty. Iâm not some washed-up, boring writer like you. I like to have fun. I thought living by the beach would be a blast, but it turns out youâre a weird, psychotic drag with creepy friends. Iâm done. I donât care about the lease. I donât care about the contract. Iâm out. Goodbye. It hasnât really been fun.â
Iâm speechless. Iâm shocked. Iâm a little hurt, actually.
And Iâm also a little relieved. Letâs face it. This whole roommate thing hasnât been working out.
âYou know, maybe weâre just at different stages of life. A while ago, Iâd have been partying right there with you. But people change. Iâve grown up a bit. This just isnât working, so I agree. Itâs time for us to part ways.â
âOh, how philosophical of you. I knew Craigslist was the worst idea ever.â
âLook, Iâm sorry. Do you want help?â
âIâm fine. Thanks, but no thanks.â She angrily tosses a few more things into her suitcase, her scowling face clenched with rage.
I raise my hands, stepping back. Apparently, I canât do anything to fix this.
Iâm not going to lie, a big part of me sighs in relief as I head to the kitchen for a cup of coffee.
Another part of me panics a bit. Because with Gemma moving out, Iâm back to square one with the financial situation.
Shit.
Not time to worry about it, though. Iâve got to be at work.
So, for now, Iâll just wave to Gemma after the last box is loaded and kiss this chapter of life goodbye.
And Iâll remind myself to never, ever look online for a roommate again. Avery was apparently a diamond in a sea of rocks. Iâll count my blessings, count my pennies, and figure something out.
