Valac vanished just before Az rounded the corner. I was still standing there, mind racing, when he strode toward me with purposeful steps. There was a tension in his jaw and fire in his eyes. Uh oh. I’d seen that look. He was mad.

“What are you doing here lurking in the hallway?” he asked, his voice tense. He’d gone back to his grumpy self, it seemed. Gone was the desire in his eyes and the passion in his touch. Mr. Scowly had come out to play.

“I’d hardly say I’m lurking, Az.”

“I saw Eisheth follow you back here. Were you talking to her?” he demanded.

Oh, so that was what this was about. At least he hadn’t overheard our conversation. He might pull a Phenex if he had.

“Yeah, I was talking to Eisheth. I told you I’d met her in the Before Times,” I said. “You know, when you had your memories.”

His eyes narrowed. “Don’t tell me she’s some kind of friend.”

“Friend?” I laughed. “Az, she tried to get you to sacrifice my soul.”

He blinked and took a step back. “I’d never do such a thing.”

“Of course you wouldn’t. But she tried all the same. Luckily for my life and my soul, you didn’t let her win.”

Az slung his hands into his pockets and rocked back on his heels. “Why did she want to talk to you tonight if you’re not friendly?”

“Unfortunately for me, she’s one of the few supernaturals who actually knows who I am. Lucifer has her poking around to see what we’re up to. She’s his spy.” I sighed. “So, you were right. We need to keep up appearances for awhile.”

He leaned forward and fingered a stray strand of my hair. “You’ve been through a lot with us. Haven’t you, Mia?”

I sighed and closed my eyes. “Honestly? You have no idea. I joined your dancers only a couple of months ago, but it feels like way longer than that. It seems like years.”

His hand slid around the back of my neck as he breathed me in. Shivers stormed across every inch of my skin, and my back arched instinctively. Desperate need poked up its head, trying to distract me from everything else. It worked.

I didn’t really care about Eisheth anymore, not when Az was touching me like this. Like he was two seconds away from ripping off my clothes and plunging himself inside of me. I almost moaned from the image of it in my head.

“This turns you on, does it?” His grip on my neck tightened. I let out a sharp cry and dropped back my head, exposing my skin to him. His lips against me were all I needed now. Otherwise, I’d probably explode.

“Everything you do turns me on,” I whispered.

“Now that,” he said in a delicious growl, “is definitely a lie. You don’t like it when I lock you up in my penthouse and throw away the key.”

“Eh.” I shuddered when his tongue drifted across my neck. “Depends on why you’re locking me up. If it’s for activities, then chain me, spank me, and trap me all you want.
