Chapter 11

Makayla

I stretched in Jax’s arms with a satisfied grin. We lay in silence, both of us thinking, before I broached the subject I was most curious about.

“You said you lost someone you loved,” I murmured, stroking my hands along his chest. “Do you want to tell me about them?”

His eyes met mine. “Her name was Hera,” he rasped.

“You were lovers,” I guessed. A tinge of jealousy shot through me at his nod, and I mentally shoved it away. “What happened?”

“Like you, we were fighting the Grivath. Except it was for very different reasons. Hera was a medic…”

He swallowed, his gaze shifting to the ceiling, where it stayed.

“We don’t have to talk about it.”

He shook his head. “You should know what—who—you’re risking your life for. Hera hated violence. She was a medic,” he repeated. “A medic who was well known in this part of the galaxy. Her approach to medicine was unique, and she would often travel to train others…”

His voice trailed off, his jaw hardening. He kept his stare on the ceiling as he gritted out his words. “She went to Uris. It was a planet close enough to the war that the injured could be transported. The planet took all races, including the Grivath, with only one rule—no violence.”

I let out a long breath, somehow knowing what would come next, and he flicked his gaze to my face with a nod.

“The Grivath had allied with the Vorti. Their commander was a man named Alos. He decided that killing our medics was worth the loss of life on their own side. They attacked in the middle of the night with an explosive so immense that in the morning, nothing was left.”

My heart cracked a little, bleeding for the man who’d lost everything with one sickening decision.

“There are no words,” I whispered. “I’m so sorry, Jax.”

He nodded, but it was obvious his mind was elsewhere. “As soon as I learned about what had happened—not just to Hera, but to so many innocent people—I vowed to make the commander pay for what he’d done. And so began the next ten years. I killed everyone who had helped make that decision. Anyone who had followed his orders. And some part of me enjoyed each death.” His eyes met mine. “This is the man you allowed into your bed.”

I slapped him lightly on his chest. “I would have done the same,” I said, and I meant it. If I could have killed Johnny for what he’d done to my sister, I likely would have. It wasn’t pretty, but it was the truth.

The corner of Jax’s mouth tipped up, and he shifted, pressing a kiss to my lips. “I devoted everything I had to hunting him,” he admitted. “Every friend I made was with the ultimate goal of finding Alos. Eventually, he got spooked. By then, he knew who was hunting him and why. He took the position as warden on Grexib, believing it would make him untouchable.”

I smiled at that. “He’s about to learn how wrong he is.
