Walking home

Marie skips ahead of us as we walk home. Ruby’s still quiet. She was quiet most of the day.

“It sucks,” she says out of nowhere.

“What does?” Ruby looks at me like I’ve lost my mind. “Oh my God, your dad! I’m so sorry!”

Ruby lets out a small laugh. “It’s okay, Em. I’m okay. It’s just… hard, you know?”

I nod, staying quiet in case she wants to talk some more.

“He would love a day like today. The sun is shining, the air is crisp, it’s finally starting to warm up a little.” She turns her face up to feel the warmth of the sun. She sighs. “Mom always says life is too short. ‘I know that all too well, baby,’” she says, imitating Georgia.

I don’t know what to say.

Ruby shrugs. “No point in moping all day. Right? My dad would want me to enjoy the sunshine, to be happy.”

“I think so,” I say. “Do you want a hug?”

She stops and turns to face me. “Yeah. Thanks, Emma.”

“For what?”

“For being there for me. Always.”

“Always.” I pull her into a tight hug.
