INFECTIOUS MESSAGES

You’re surprised to see the guy from technical support sitting at your computer when you return to your desk a few minutes later. He scowls as you approach. You’re still preoccupied with your ruined shirt and barely hear him telling you that you’ve caused a computer virus outbreak in the company. He’s obviously mistaken. If anything, you probably saved the company from infection, because you remember receiving an e-mail yesterday from an old friend who had warned you about a computer worm called “I love you.” Apparently, the program e-mailed people with fake messages and when they opened the mail it deleted a bunch of files and e-mailed itself out to new people. Your friend had mailed you instructions on how to remove the malicious program, although you couldn’t seem to open the file he sent. What did you do that was so bad?

The IT person looks at you with disgust. The e-mail wasn’t sent from your friend, he explains. It was a fake message sent by a new version of the worm itself. By clicking on the file you let the evil program install itself on your computer, and from there it had gone on to infect everyone on the network and everyone else in your address book. They’d had to shut down the whole system to remove the virus. Meetings had been canceled, hours of work lost. You are in trouble.
