THE VACCINE-AUTISM LINK

If a child is reported missing, everyone immediately joins in the search. Men and women alike have powerful intrinsic urges to protect and guard our young. But what about the millions of children who have “disappeared” into the abyss of autism? Where is the hue and cry?

Fifty years ago, autism was rare, identified in only 1 in 10,000 children. Rates began to creep up in the early 1980s, with the disorder appearing in about 1 in 5,000. By 2007, however, autism affected 1 in every 150 children. And today, 1 in 88 American children—and 1 in 54 boys—have an autism spectrum disorder. That’s a stunning 78 percent increase in just five years!13

These statistics, which were released in 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are terrifying. If current growth curves hold steady, autistic children will soon outnumber healthy children. Unless something is done to reverse this insidious trend, virtually all male children will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder by 2032, followed by all girls in 2041. This frightening projection may seem implausible, but it is based on current government statistics and simple math.14

The prevalence of other neurological disorders affecting our children has soared as well. One in six American children is now identified as having a learning disability, and the numbers of students enrolled in special education increased by 30 percent in the past decade alone. What’s going on? In my opinion, the major culprit—and the only obvious and absolute constant for these skyrocketing numbers of autistic and learning-disabled children—is the dramatic increase in federally recommended and state-mandated vaccinations.
