General Guidelines for Managing Bipolar Variations

Your treatment choices are based on weighing evidence about benefits and risks. There will almost always be less evidence than you would like. Your doctor may have his or her own biases and way of evaluating the benefit-risk ratio. Make sure that the treatment choices are made with you in mind, by evaluating the evidence for risks and benefits yourself, even if you must rely on your doctor to present that evidence. After all, you are the one who will go off to see the therapist or put the pill in your mouth. If you remain uncertain that the benefits really outweigh the risks and potential hassles, you are likely to miss appointments or doses—or even stop entirely. Talk to your doctor before you do that! But for now, let's focus on the basic principles of treatment so you will know how to approach the various medication and nonmedication approaches that are available.
