Elizabeth tugged her skirt hem self-consciously. "Well, here goes nothing," she murmured. It was Monday morning, and she was in the girls' bathroom nearest to her locker, looking uneasily at the outfit she had chosen for her first day back in public as a single girl. The denim miniskirt looked more like something Jessica would wear. "But I want to be more like Jessica," Elizabeth reminded herself.
She took a deep breath and practiced a flirtatious smile in the mirror. Not bad, she praised herself. Not bad at all.
In fact, she kept the smile on her face as she walked out into the hallwayâand smack into Todd.
"Liz!" he cried, overjoyed to see her. His glance took in everything, her miniskirt, her fluffed-up hair.
But the smile on her face vanished the minute she saw him. "Ohâhi, Todd," she said casually.
"You know, I called you this morning to see if you wanted a ride. But your mom told me you'd already gone," he said, falling into step beside her.
Elizabeth didn't know what to say. It made her feel really uncomfortable to see how much Todd still wanted to be with her. Forget about me, Todd, she warned him silently. You don't want to go out with someone like me.
Todd was uncharacteristically quiet, too. He seemed to want to say more, but he didn't.
"Listen, I have to run," Elizabeth told him as they turned the corner. "I promised Penny I'd meet with her before homeroom. Can we catch up later on?"
"Sure," Todd said, shrugging his shoulders. He was acting nonchalant, but his brown eyes betrayed his sadness. Elizabeth could feel him watching her as she bounded off down the hall. She hoped he would get over it soon, so they could both get on with their lives!
"Liz? Is that you?" Enid demanded, setting her lunch tray down next to her friend. "I thought you were Jessica. Since when do you wear a skirt the size of a Band-Aid to school?"
Elizabeth took a bite of her salad. "Since today," she said calmly.
"Liz, I overheard Paul Jeffries in the lunch line. He was bragging that he has a date with you tonight!" Enid looked at her in disbelief. "He was lying, wasn't he?"
Elizabeth shook her head. "He asked me to go to the movies with him, and I said sure. Why not?" she asked. "There's nothing wrong with going out with someone new."
As a matter of fact, Elizabeth was more than a little proud of her conquest. Paul was a cute senior who had written a few articles for The Oracle, and she thought he had real possibilities. He was tall, with dark curly hair, a nice smile, and a great personality. He had only recently broken up with his girlfriend, and a lot of people thought he was the most eligible guy at school.
"Well, there's nothing wrong with it," Enid said, "except that Paul happens to be a real womanizer. He's gone out with about a dozen girls this month alone. You'd better watch out, Liz.
