Chapter 11
I stood at the nurse’s station exactly one hour later. “Have her paged, Nurse Judy,” I said impatiently and drummed my fingers on the counter. “Sorry, please have her paged,” I corrected myself.
“Maybe she went home,” Judy said as she paged.
I scowled at her. “Don’t cover for her. She’s here, I can feel it. She’s probably breathing all over some poor unsuspecting slob,” I said, shaking my head. “Where did she go?”
Judy leaned in. “Well, Dr. Iverson was at the elevator—”
I interrupted her. “Dr. Iverson? She got into an elevator with Dr. Iverson?” I slammed my hand on the counter.
Judy jumped. “I-I think so. Is that bad?”
“Christ, that stubborn woman will kill me. I swear she wants me dead,” I said angrily and turned away from the desk. Maggie stood there, giving me a sheepish grin.
“Hey, there you are. Are you ready? Let’s go,” she said in a raspy voice. She coughed and smiled as she grabbed me by the arm. “See you tomorrow, Judy,” she said, pulling on my arm.
Judy gave her a sick apologetic smile. “Hope you feel better, Dr. Winfield.”
I was unmovable. “Where have you been?” I gently but firmly grabbed Maggie by the elbow and guided her down the corridor. “Answer me.”
“Don’t start with me, Kate,” she said. “Your chicken soup did the trick. We should have it bottled and—”
“Come with me.” I pulled Maggie into the doctor’s lounge. I gently pushed Maggie into a chair and loomed over her. Maggie looked up, pale and tired; her eyes were glassy. I was furious and worried and scared and… My heart will never withstand this woman. I was trying to maintain my patience, and I sat next to her.
“Okay. Would you please tell me where you were?” I asked slowly. Maggie sighed and sneezed. I offered a well-deserved “God bless you.” “Did you honestly get on an elevator with Dr. Iverson?” My heart was pounding in my chest. Her look told me the answer. “Why, Maggie?”
“Kate, listen to me. Dr. Iverson said he was here from Germany, but he didn’t know when his work would be done. He was carrying a clipboard, and I tried to get a good look at it. It was in German. He got off the elevator and a blond-haired younger man was waiting for him. They walked down the corridor, so I got off—”
I dropped my head and let it fall on the table with a thud. “You got off the elevator?”
“Yes, now listen. It was down in the basement.” Maggie sneezed twice.
“God Bless you, squared.” I smiled in spite of the situation as Maggie blew her nose.
“You know what’s in the basement?” she asked from behind her tissue.
“I can’t imagine.”
“The morgue. And guess whose voice I heard?”
“In the morgue? I can’t even venture a good guess.”
“Ellen and another woman.”
“Are you sure? Ellen and another woman? In the morgue? That’s disgusting.” I grimaced as if I drank sour milk. “God, Maggie, she’s a ghoul.”
“You idiot.”
I chuckled and stopped. “Hey, I’m still mad at you.
