VERONICA

I spent my morning in a meeting, negotiating a lengthy contract with a new client, and by midday I was exhausted. I retreated to my office for a quiet lunch, but upon entering I was startled by a large bouquet of red roses sitting grandiosely on my desk. Smitten by its beauty and vibrant color, I nestled my nose in the soft petals. Attached to the clear vase was a white envelope with a beautifully written love note enclosed, sincerely from David.

David wanted children. He recently expressed his desire to start a family and was showering me with more gifts than usual. He was also filling me up with delicious cream pies every time we made love, in hopes his wish would come true sooner than later. I enjoyed our marriage, our lifestyle, and our home with just the two of us. I also enjoyed my freedom that allowed me to dedicate my time and energy into building my career, and going on vacations whenever I wanted. I loved our life just the way it was, and wasn’t ready to change it.

After work I went to Sisu for happy hour. My workday left me feeling drained and all I wanted was a few drinks and to be in Cai’s presence. Being around her made me feel good and I needed that. “Hey, what can I get for you?” A bartender approached as I scanned the faces behind the bar, looking for Cai. All the faces were new, except for one.

“Hi, I’m looking for Cai. Is she here?”

“Oh, she’s not here yet.”

Slightly disappointed, I smiled and said, “Then I’ll have a gin and tonic, please.”

With my drink in front of me, I scrolled through emails and patiently waited for Cai. After a short moment, I felt a hand on my back and a kiss on my cheek. “What are you doing here?”

I jumped at his touch and the sound of his voice before turning around. “Hey baby.”

“What’s up?” David looked at my drink and then back to me. “You alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine.”

He looked me over and smiled. “You do look fine…especially in this skirt. Did you receive a gift today?”

“Yes.” I puckered my lips for a kiss. “I love it.”

“And I love you.” He kissed my lips and grabbed my hand. “Come with me. You can finish your drink in my office.”

Tipsy, I slid down from the barstool and followed him to the back. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” He questioned as he unlocked his office door.

I walked in as he turned on the light and close the door. I didn’t expect to see him there either. I checked his calendar before coming and saw that he was supposed to be at the location of the car dealership he was opening. “I just came by for a drink. Didn’t think I needed to tell you.”

“All the wine, champagne, and liquor at home and you chose to come here for, what is this?” He grabbed my martini glass and smelled it before walking away.
