So it would appear that there was never going to be any “showdown” coming from Winnifred Trainor at all, as the artist had already effectively shut down the engagement by crying poor. Indeed, Trainor herself had told the artist’s sister that Thomson had planned to leave the park the very week he went missing, which would have put it at the very time Fraser had indicated that the “showdown” was supposedly going to take place.8 And with no “showdown” looming, there existed no “music” that Thomson would have had to face and, thus, no pressure that would have pushed the artist over the edge to either commit suicide or to confront the lodge owner for immediate repayment of a twenty-dollar debt. Besides, to a fast-talking businessman like Shannon Fraser it would have been child’s play to put Thomson off for another week or two in the collection of such a debt. There existed no need for things to get violent between the two men over a situation that Fraser could have diffused quite handily. But if Fraser had discovered that the artist had been sleeping with his wife—now that might have led to a confrontation of a different kind entirely.
MacGregor’s book further relates a fascinating anecdote that lends some credence to such an event occurring that was shared with him by a man named Brad McLellan. McLellan was a teenager when Shannon Fraser had passed away. The recently widowed Annie Fraser had by then moved to the town of Huntsville and onto the same street as McLellan’s family. According to MacGregor:
Brad McLellan, the young neighbor of both Winnie Trainor and the widowed Annie Fraser on Minerva Street in Huntsville during the 1950s, told me shortly before his death that he had overheard Annie tell his parents the story of Fraser teaching Tom “a lesson” only to have the lesson go tragically wrong.9
