That’s why the first thing we have to keep in mind when talking with our relativistic friends is to lead with mercy. Behind the moral issue you might be discussing with your friend is a real person who needs God’s love and mercy. Don’t underestimate the heavy burdens of unhappiness, fear, shame, and guilt many people carry deep in their hearts. Even if they display an air of confidence, self-sufficiency, or disregard for religion, some of the most outwardly successful and self-assured people are aching on the inside. Deep down, many are unsatisfied and longing for something more in life. No matter how much success, money, fame, alcohol, or sex they have, their hearts are still restless. Only God can fill that void.

Two Pillars of Mercy

So as we go out to the world not just with the moral law, but also with the good news of mercy, let’s keep in mind the two pillars of mercy: forgiveness and healing.
