PART IV

Violet

CHAPTER 61

Purple is my color. Purple is my soul. I am Violet Greene. Violet is the flower. Greene is the stem. Life is a garden. My pot moves from place to place.

Sometimes it’s winter. Sometimes it’s spring.

Sometimes I’m in the light, and other times I’m in the shade.

There’s all sorts of environmental conditions out here, where I have to adapt. I have real potted violets sitting on my study desk for decoration. If I take proper care of them, then they’ll be with me for a long time. Of course, there’s always the chance they’ll outlive me.

One of my sisters hurt Georgie.

And I don’t want to be next.

* * *

That’s right, I didn’t do it. I didn’t stab the boy. I’m not asking anyone to believe me. It’s merely a statement of fact. I don’t see the act itself as damning. It is not the manifestation of evil. My sister didn’t make the blade. She didn’t make the boy, for that matter either. Or the house. Or the bed he was sleeping in. That anyone would feel it’s their place to judge her is humorous to me. She was only eleven, after all. You adults had a hand in this too.

Really, I don’t mind. When people look at you like you’re a potential knife-wielding maniac, it actually gives you a certain type of status. You’re allowed to have grievance with them. Why are you staring at me? Do we have a problem? Is there something you’d like to share?

There was this one girl – Kristen – who mistook our notoriety for weakness. In our first year of middle school, she rounded up some of the ‘cool’ girls to make fun of me. I’m just Violet after all. I’m the bookworm. I’m the sister with the reading glasses. It’s gotta be one of the other two. I’m the least likely to have done it.

So, that one recess, where Kristen and her goons cornered me in the locker bay… yelling in my ear… knocking my books to the floor… That’s where I showed her who she was dealing with.

“Harry and Madeline. Amie not spelled with a Y, but with an I and an E,” I said. The names of her parents and baby sister.

“What?” Kristen gasped. “What the hell are you–?”

“Number Six. Porterstop Lane, New Hansville.” Her home address.

“Who told you where I live?”

A silent wave, moving through the girls.

“No one told me,” I answered truthfully. “I followed you home last Friday.”

“You… freak…” she mumbled.

I took off my glasses. “Pick the books up, and we’ll forget this ever happened.”

She hesitated, and I grinned. “I’m not asking twice.”

Kristen bent her knees and handed me the books.

* * *

You get the point now, don’t you. You can see how my personality and reputation has developed over the years. In the beginning, when the new kids meet you, you’re a little famous, and you’re a bit weird. Some people are afraid, and many stay away. I’m always honest with people though. Don’t mess with me, and I won’t mess with you.
