My Favourite Five – Barcelona
Barcelona is an interesting city situated in an interesting place. It is a part of Spain that does not seem to want to be Spanish. Many people there identify themselves as Catalonian. In fact, this is no new thing, but has been going on for quite a while. You may have read about the recent attempted declaration of independence and all the craziness that went with it, but to the Catalonians, it is a serious matter.
This place is a key example and reminder of how, even within a country, there is so much variety to be found. Barcelona and the surrounding area has character in spades.
1. Roman Ruins
Let us start with the origins. There have been settlements in the Barcelona area for a very long time. Proof of this can be found by looking for the numerous Roman ruins spread out over the city.
The first stop for any history buff is the Barcelona City museum. At the time of writing, it costs about 7 euros to get in.
It is well put together, and the basement has a series of preserved foundations left over from the Roman period of settlement. The other floors cover different eras of the Barcelona area. It is really amazing to see it all there, hidden below a busy city like that. It makes you want to just dig under everything and try and find extra stuff. There must be so much still undiscovered. I am not sure that the owners of the buildings would be too happy with that, but I can dream. Once you have been to the museum and got an idea for what you are looking for, there are a number of other places in the area to visit.
