CHAPTER 6

Speaking Truth to the King

George Washington Williams

One man had been to the Congo and hated how Africans were being treated. His name was George Washington Williams, and he was a black American.

Williams was a brilliant man with many talents. At the time when slavery was just ending in the United States, he became a minister, newspaperman, lawyer, and public speaker. Later, he met several presidents of the United States.

One day, Williams heard about King Leopold’s new country, the Congo Free State. So he decided to go there and find out what it was like. Williams thought it might be a good place for black Americans to live and work.

Williams went to Belgium first and talked to King Leopold. He was dazzled by the king. He thought the Congo must be wonderful.

Then he went to Africa to see it for himself.
