The Pointing System

Unlike Stone Mountain, Rushmore’s face was too lumpy for projecting images from below to show where to carve. Instead, Borglum used a system called pointing. At the top of the head to be carved was a flat, circular plate that was marked by degrees. A thirty-foot beam with two plumb lines hanging from the end was mounted on the plate. It matched a much smaller beam and plate in the studio that sat on the head of the studio model. One inch on the studio model was equal to one foot on the mountain. Matching the exact degrees gave an accurate idea of how deep to cut into the rock.
