Pascal at a Glance (1623–1662)

Born in 1623 in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Blaise Pascal was definitely a child prodigy. With encouragement from his father, he learned about everything he could. Science and math were his main passions before he began studying theology. At only nineteen years old he invented a calculator and was a pioneer in the field of probability. By the age of thirty, however, all those numbers went to his head and he had a spiritual meltdown, suffering from hallucinations. After this experience, he became focused on religion. He developed a philosophy based on the premise that humans are inherently gloomy and they can only find interior peace and true happiness if they can connect with God. Pascal’s health was fragile. He dealt with chronic pain, which slowed down his writing. His two major works, published shortly after his death, were as precocious and intelligent as he was.
