Chapter 6
Sebastian braced himself as he closed in on Lord Grey and his friends. He knew he was in the right. Thanks to Honorâs investigation and discovery about the boy, Jerry, he believed he knew how Grey had managed to alter the original contract. And while he didnât expect a resolution to the entire debacle, he knew he could lay the groundwork for victory that evening. All he needed to do was throw Grey off balance in front of people whose opinions mattered to him.
âGood evening, gentlemen, ladies,â he said, bowing perfectly to the group, who now had their noses in the air. It was a bloody shame that Lady Charlotte, Lady Georgiana, and Lady Mary were part of the group. It would have been a hundred times easier to call Grey out with only men present.
âWhat do you want?â Lord Grey asked, staring down his nose at Sebastian. Considering Sebastian was inches taller, he was forced to assume a ridiculous pose to do so.
Sebastian straightened from his bow with a frown. Grey refused even the barest niceties. It made Sebastianâs task all the more difficult. He wasnât about to be intimidated, though.
âIt is a fine night for the theater,â he said, attempting to turn on the charm he knew he possessed for the ladies. âIâm told Kean is the most brilliant Shakespearean actor since the bard himself lived.â
His comment was met by frosty silence. The ladies of the group glanced about as though they were embarrassed to be seen taking part in the conversation. Grey sneered at Sebastian. He leaned close to his friendâa dandy if ever Sebastian had seen oneâand whispered something in his ear. The dandy snorted into a laugh.
Sebastian dropped all pretense of affability. In the back of his head, a voice told him that he should have consulted Honor about his plan to confront Grey first, and that he should have brought her with him. These had been her peopleâthough she was a thousand times better than any of themâand she would have been able to advise him as to the best way to take control of the situation. It was his damned pride and impatience to bring the matter to an end that had pushed him on.
He cleared his throat. âVery well, then,â he said. âI can see that attempting civility is not the way to proceed in this matter.â
âWe have a matter?â Grey asked, staring at Sebastian with an exaggerated look of bafflement.
âYou know very well we do, Grey,â Sebastian said.
âThatâs Lord Grey to you,â Lady Mary snapped. âIâll thank you to remember your place.â
âThis is no affair for a woman,â Grey cut her off. Sebastian couldnât tell if it was because he didnât believe a woman should have a part in anything touching on trade or because he wasnât willing to share attention. He turned back to Sebastian, his teeth bared as he studied him and apparently found him wanting. âI repeat, sir, what do you want?â
âOnly to inform you that your subterfuge has been uncovered,â Sebastian said.
