Chapter 16
I was surprised that my wife had seemed to agree to make Christmas less stressful than in the past. It was short-lived as I found her at the breakfast table the next morning, calendar in hand, jotting down what we could do to fix up Evelynâs house and when.
âI thought we would just do stuff over there when we found time. This is making it feel more like work than a fun family project,â I reported to her. âSheâs not moving until early next year. Why are you cramming it all into the month of November?â
Melissa glared at me. âHave you forgotten what is occurring the week after Thanksgiving?â Without waiting for me to answer, she continued, âI thought maybe we should get this project wrapped up before your fatherâs surgery. You know just in case.â
âIn case what?â
I could tell she didnât want to answer this question with Jake and Maddie eagerly listening in.
âIn case we have a different widow to take care of after that,â she responded. The kids were oblivious to this comment, but I understood right away whom she was referring to. I hastily grabbed my coffee and angrily headed toward the door. Melissa noticed right away my change in mood and followed me out the door into the garage. âIâm sorry to be so blunt about it,â she said as I opened the door of my truck, avoiding eye contact with her. âItâs not helping anything to be in denial that such a thing could happen. We are talking about major surgery on a major organ of an elderly person here.â
âHeâs going to be fine,â I muttered as I started the engine.
âYou need to talk to him. Youâre going to regret it if you donât.â
âJust let me know what day youâve got me penciled in to work at Evelynâs,â I responded flippantly. She stood there staring back at me as I pulled out of the garage and the automatic door closed, revealing less and less of her until it finally hit the concrete driveway.
I was busy enough at work to not think much about our testy conversation. Shortly after lunch, she texted me: âIf you can pick up the kids from school, I will stop by the hardware store to pick up some paint samples to show to Evelyn tonight.â
The kids were overjoyed to see me drive up to the school and to find out that instead of heading home to do homework we were headed over to Evelynâs. Sam was hard at work on the porch when we pulled up. For the first time I was able to walk to the front door of the house without walking on plywood or holding my breath. He had done an excellent job and had completed the task much quicker than I would have done.
As it was an unseasonably warm afternoon, Evelyn was sitting on the lawn chair next to the door on the newly constructed porch floor. Both she and Sam were in a good mood as though they had been laughing and chatting all day.
